Lexington, South Carolina, is a consistent favorite for people relocating to the Columbia area. Its blend of location, schools, lake access, and a growing community makes it one of the Midlands’ most popular places to live.
Whether you’re moving for work, looking for more space, or just exploring your options, here’s a quick look at what living in Lexington is actually like.
Location and commute. Lexington sits just west of Columbia, and one of the biggest reasons people choose it is convenience. Most parts of Lexington put you about 15 to 20 minutes from downtown Columbia, the state capital, and the University of South Carolina. The Columbia Metro Airport is about 15 minutes away, which is a nice bonus for anyone who travels regularly.
Because of that proximity, Lexington has become one of the fastest-growing areas in the Midlands. Many people who work in Columbia prefer to live here because they get a little more space without a long commute.
Lake Murray. The lake stretches across more than 600 miles of shoreline and nearly 50,000 acres of water, and it’s a central part of life here. Boating, fishing, and spending time on the water are all part of the culture.
Many Lexington neighborhoods are only a few minutes from public boat ramps and marinas, and some sit directly on the lake. You don’t have to live on the waterfront to enjoy the lifestyle, though. Just being close to it changes the pace of things.
Schools. For families, the schools are often the deciding factor. Most of Lexington falls within Lexington County School District 1, widely considered one of the top-performing districts in South Carolina. Schools like River Bluff High and Lexington High School boast strong academic and athletic programs. As a result, this reputation consistently drives high demand from buyers year after year.
Housing options are just as varied. Newer construction neighborhoods come with community amenities like pools and walking trails, while more established areas offer larger lots and mature trees. You’ll find everything from starter homes to larger executive properties, along with homes close to or directly on Lake Murray.
The area’s rapid growth comes from buyers feeling they get more space and value here than in many other places.
Downtown and lifestyle. Lexington has a more suburban feel than the nearby smaller towns, which means shopping, restaurants, and everyday conveniences are all within easy reach. The downtown area has grown quite a bit over the past several years, with local restaurants, breweries, and community events that bring people together year-round.
New neighborhoods, schools, and retail developments continue to pop up regularly, giving the area an energy that feels very much on the rise.
One thing to keep in mind. Because Lexington has grown so quickly, traffic can get heavy on some main roads, especially during rush hour and school pickup times. It’s not a dealbreaker for most people, but it’s worth knowing before you move.
Most buyers find that strong schools, proximity to the lake, and easy access to Columbia outweigh the traffic, keeping Lexington in high demand.
